Preparing Your Fencing For Winter

That summer heatwave feels like a long time ago now, with temperatures plummeting below freezing leaving us to content with snow, ice and treacherous conditions across the country.

While everyday tasks such as driving to work can become a danger, the cold weather also presents a danger to your garden. We know the same old story that plants go through during the winter, but the things that surround our gardens are left to brave the conditions without any protection.

Of course, we’re talking about fences.

Now, fences aren’t notoriously difficult to look after. Once you’ve got them up and given them a good coat of paint, that’s it, right?

Well for the most part, yes. However, there are some tricky conditions to look out for when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and preparing your fences for them can help prevent any issues.

Fence Posts

As the name suggests, fence posts are placed at intervals throughout your fencing to maintain its structure.

Posts are particularly susceptible to damage during the winter months because their foundations are buried beneath the ground.

As we head into the winter months, which brings rain, snow and ice, all of which contain one common enemy of wood - moisture.

Too much moisture in wood creates the ideal environment for mould to grow, which can harm its structural stability, eventually resulting in your fence collapsing.

So how you can prevent that?

Here are a few tips:

●    Dig a channel or moisture to soak away from fence posts, guiding it down to an area that won’t be affected by too much moisture.

●    Add gravel around where the fence post is buried to quickly drain any water that could congregate

●    Make sure posts are cut at an angle to stop pooling of water at the top of the fence

Fence Panels

When you think about it, your fence panels are going to face quite a challenge over the winter. Strong winds, rain and snow, can all put stress on the wood which could results in a panel simply giving way if it’s not protected well enough.

Here are a few tips that will help your fence panels survive the winter:

●    Keep an eye out for any structural damage that might need taking care of. This could be damage or simply maintenance that needs to be carried out, such as tightening screws, or reinforcing a broken section. Addressing these sooner rather than later can prevent the damage from getting worse.

●    Add preservative. Once you get your wooden fence panels installed, it’s tempting to leave them in their natural state. However it’s essential that you treat wood to make sure it’s water-resistant. Even if you’ve already applied a coat, it can be worth adding another before the winter months for some extra protection.
